Code of Conduct - Tossa de Mar - Summer 2009/2010
General
All teaching sessions are led by staff who are qualified, as an instructor, in the discipline they are teaching. Where the sport has no obvious National Governing Body (NGB) we will use staff who have relevant qualifications. Teaching ratios are in line with those laid down by the relevant sport's governing body but final decision lies with the chief instructor (for example: ratios of instructors to pupils may need to be increased to safely deliver a session in adverse conditions). Non-teaching staff such as helms, expedition leaders or support staff will be suitably qualified and/or experienced. Our procedures are detailed in written form as are risk assessments for the activities we deliver; both are regularly updated. Our centre is subject to external examination by a suitably qualified person at least once per season. Staff, despite having the required qualifications when joining us, are regularly assessed during their period of employment with TJM. Activities which are 'bought in' (e.g. fun rides) are contracted form reputable suppliers who use qualified and experienced staff and whose operations conform to regulations laid down by appropriate legislative bodies and local law. Supplementary activities bought in from external suppliers in resort, directly or indirectly, by the school come outside the terms of our agreement with the school and as such TJM will not be held responsible for any eventualities arising from such purchases (e.g. pedaloes).
Sailing & Windsurfing
All instructors teaching either windsurfing or sailing will have, as a minimum requirement, the status of qualified instructor and hold valid current certificates supporting that status issued by the appropriate NGB (for these sports that NBG will be the RYA at Tossa de Mar). The instructors will teach methods laid down by the NGB and within the ratios laid down by that NGB - at time of printing the recommended ratios were 1:6 for windsurfing and 1:9 for sailing.
Wearing of buoyancy aids is compulsory for both sports. N.B., Joyriding - where students are taken out in a boat helmed by one of our staff - is not considered as 'instruction' and in such cases the helmsman will have the minimum of RYA Level 3 competence. Equipment will be to acceptable levels to allow safe operation of activities and will conform to any statutory limits on age or standards which may be laid down by the appropriate NGB or any other relevant body.
Paddle Boarding
There is no NGB for paddle boarding, however, all instructors teaching paddle boarding will have, as a minimum requirement, the status of either BCU qualified instructor or hold the surf life saving paddle board endorsement. The instructors will broadly teach methods recommended by the BCU with maximum ratios of 1:10. Wearing of buoyancy aids is compulsory for all participants. Equipment will be to acceptable levels to allow safe operation of activities and will conform to any statutory limits on age or condition laid down by any relevant bodies.
Rescue Boats
All staff driving our rescue boats will have a minimum qualification equivalent to the RYA Power Boat Level 2 qualification.
Snorkeling
The minimum qualification for the instructors teaching snorkelling will be RLSS Bronze medallion. BSAC qualified instructors are also used. Teaching ratios are 1:6.
Mountain Biking & Walking
Staff leading expeditions on foot or bike will be experienced in leading such treks and have a first hand knowledge of the routes being taken. Adult to pupil ratios will be maximum of 1:12 [including the trail leader]. FIRST AID All instructors will have current first aid certificates.
