Risk Assessment - Soustons

Coach travel
Participants arrive on time. Participants wait in safe place. Do not rush towards bus. Wear seat belts. Stay seated. Do not block aisles. Remain seated at destination until staff instruction. Use waste bins for litter. Never lean out or throw things from the window of the coach. Never run about. Never kneel or stand on seats. Chewing gum banned from coach. Take care of belongings, especially wallet and other valuables. If you feel unwell tell a leader. If you have ever been travel sick take medication and have sick bags ready. Leaders check above rules complied with. Leaders count participants on and off. Beware Door may open on traffic side of road.

Service Station / Ferry
Leader issues instructions ref time allowed to purchase snacks or go to the toilet - participants listen - use microphone to inform them of rendezvous time, what they can/cannot do, where they can/cannot go, to learn what the outside of the coach looks like, no crossing over motorway bridge. Stay in min 2's. Participants suggested not to use the arcade machines. Participants report back to the coach or meeting place a few minutes before rendezvous time. Leader checks with driver if coach locked. SECURITY of belongings - do not allow part's access to the coach alone and they must wait outside coach at rendezvous time. Beware of traffic using bus park. Explain to go to enquires desk on ferry if lost. Explain vital to meet at the correct time on the ferry.

In Soustons on Excursions
Participants listen to and obey leader instructions. Inform them to take care when crossing roads and to use designated crossing areas when possible. They stay in minimum of 3's. They are not to split up or to be distracted from the set task. They will be informed which areas are out of bounds. They are reminded of code of conduct. Be sticklers ref. rendezvous times. Take small group head counts when necessary. Inform them what to do if they get lost. Signing in/out book used when appropriate. Take care of belongings. Warn of potential hazards.

On the Lake / Mountain Bikes
Informed which areas are out of bounds. Pupils look after valuables/belongings. Leaders take regular head counts. Teacher has First Aid Box. Pupils do not swim unless instructed by Party Leader. Check lifeguards present and check flags. Pupils wear old trainers if permitted to paddle/swim. Absolutely no litter on the grass. Team games, pupils alerted to bat/ball dangers, sand in eyes. Return all equipment to hotel. Pupils forewarned of potential hazards. Dangers of cycling on road stretches - Leaders control crossing/movement. On bikes carry clothing in rucksack - danger of items trapped in wheel/chain. Controlled speed/braking on bikes. Single file when appropriate. Discourage inappropriate cycling. Group all check bike is fully functional before departure. Take water & wear helmet.

Surfing/Bodyboarding
Informed which areas are out of bounds. Pupils look after valuables/belongings. Leaders take regular head counts. Teacher has First Aid Box. Check lifeguards present and check flags. Staff aware of ratios in water - pupil buddy system. No litter on the beach. Team games, pupils alerted to bat/ball dangers, sand in eyes. Pupils forewarned of potential hazards. Regular talks to instructor to ensure proper transition of responsibility at change over time in lessons. Informed to listen to instructors. Ensure suncream is applied regularly. No child in water without supervision.

High Ropes Course
Group informed of general instructions re. equipment, safety, limits, changing. Group instructed about each piece of equipment prior to taking part Leaders undertake visual check of equipment as group prepare Issue warnings about paths/safety/use of both carabiners Leaders observe activities to monitor general well-being of pupils - give support and go around with certain children where necessary. Pupils forewarned of potential hazards. Where to go when tired/finished.

The Accommodation
Group will be instructed on general regulations prior to the trip and by Party Leader at the Accommodation. No running/rushing about. Keep noise levels appropriate others use the accommodation. If visiting other rooms you must have permission. There will be a fire safety talk to instruct Group on fire exits and fire drill. Group keep rooms/bathrooms clean and tidy. Report all damage/problems to staff. Leaders check security of bedroom locks and main door security arrangements. Leaders aware of master keys. Leaders check security of windows/electrical fittings regularly. Group told who to see if upset or worried. Group told the maximum enjoyment of the whole group can only be achieved through full co-operation and bags of enthusiasm shown by the group to make a positive, happy, fun atmosphere for the whole duration of their holiday. Look after belongings and valuables.
